When You're Running Out of Everything - Ps. Rick Warren

When You’re Hoping For a Miracle- Part 1

1 Kings 17:1-16

“Now Elijah confronted King Ahab, ‘As surely as God lives, the God of Israel whom I worship and serve— there will be no dew or rain during the next few years unless I give the word!’”

1 Kings 17:1

KERITH (cut off) : THE RAVINE (cold, dark, lonely...) OF OBSCURITY

“Then the Lord said to Elijah, ‘Go east and hide in the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan. The Kerith brook will give you fresh water to drink and I’ve commanded ravens to bring you food there every day.’ So Elijah obeyed what the Lord said to do. He moved to the Kerith Ravine and lived there. The birds brought him food each morning and evening and he drank from the brook. BUT AFTER A WHILE THE BROOK DRIED UP, because there was no rain.”

1 Kings 17:2-7

You need time alone with God, God need your undivided attention.

3 REASONS GOD ALLOWS BROOKS TO DRY UP (something good was lost)

  • Keep me from depending on the brook instead of God.
  • To move me to a better place.
  • To proof God has not forgotten me.

JOURNEY NORTH: THE ROAD (scary, insecure and no idea where to go and how long the journey it gonna takes) OF INSECURITY

“Then the Lord said, ‘Now get up and go to Zarephath and live there. I’ve prepared a widow there to take care of you.’ So Elijah went to Zarephath.”

1 Kings 17:8-9a

Elijah go from bad to worse...

WHAT TO REMEMBER:

When you scare to dead, do the 3 things:

  1. The path to a miracle is always through uncomfortable territory.

Like Moses need to walk through the Red Sea before get in the promised land; David need to walk out to the battle field before he get the victory when face the Goliath...

Which is the thing you feel insecure? Financially? ... congrats you are path to miracle.

  1. The source of the miracle is always unexpected.

You can't figure out the way which God want to do the miracle. You can't manipulate God.

Like Abraham, God say want let him be great nation, but he thought he could have child from the lady not Sarah.... that's wrong... that's Abraham plan not God's plan.

When we try to figure out how God will do it, it will always not happened as the same we thought, as God does miracle in illogical ways as “My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the LORD. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine.”

Isaiah55:8NLT

Our ways is second best, His ways is the Best.

"God is God, but I'm not."

What you need to do when you on this road?

Don't fret, don't fear, don't forget, don't figure out, don't try to formulate, just have faith, just trust God. When God ask me to do even doesn't make sense, I'm gonna do it because God say do it, then you been set up for a miracle.

  1. The path to a miracle is always CPR. Command, Promise, Risk.

Every time God does a miracle everywhere, always will come with this format.

There is a command, and promises and you take Risk (step out in faith).

ZAREPHATH: THE REFINERY (use heat and pressure to purify and shape raw medal) OF SCARCITY

“When he reached the town gate, Elijah saw a widow gathering firewood. He asked her, ‘Would you please bring me a drink of water?’ As she was going to get it, Elijah added, ‘and please bring me a small piece of bread, too.’ The woman answered, ‘As surely as your God lives, I swear I have no bread. I only have a handful of our left in a small jar and a little olive oil left in a jug. I came to gather some wood so I could go home and cook our last meal.

My son and I will eat it and then we’ll die of hunger.’”

“‘Don’t be afraid!’ Elijah said. ‘Go home and first make a small loaf of bread from what you have, and bring it to me. Then cook something for yourself and your son. God says, ‘I assure you that jar of flour will never be empty, and the jug of oil will never run out, until the day I send rain to the land.’ So the widow did what Elijah told her to do, and she and her son and Elijah had enough food every day. The jar of our and the jug of oil never ran out, just as God had promised.” 1 Kings 17:9b-16

Elijah also give the widow a chance for a miracle too. A test of FAITH.

WHAT TO REMEMBER:

What to remember when you out of the resources? 3 things:

  1. Whatever I need more of, give what I have to God. In fact give it all...

We can always afford to be generous. God wanna teach you be generous and have faith.

  1. Whatever I have the least stuff, I gave it to God. Is a test.

World teach you: whatever you have extra, give it away. (Financially, time, energy...) give the leftover...

God teach you: give what you don't have to give, and give the really need to hold on to it.

  1. I don't give to get a blessing but to be a blessing.

Be a blessing, a giver... not a taker.

LESSONS FOR RECESSIONS

  1. God is all I need. (Draw close to God, have private time with him)
  2. Where God guide, God provide. (God won't sent you to a place which he not gonna provide for you)
  3. I must trust Him one day at a time.
  4. God promises hence on my obedience. (Command, promises and risk)

“My God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.”

Phil. 4:19

The prayer of Surrender - Ps. Rick Warren

Connecting With God: The Lord’s Prayer – Message 3

SOURCES OF STRESS

  1. Uncontrollable circumstances
  2. Uncooperative people
  3. Unexplainable pain (pain doesn't make sense)

This all we can't control, but the only solution is SURRENDER.

His kingdom is not in this world. His kingdom is not matter of thought, but the power. Is not the words matter, is the works matter.

“Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven.”

Matthew 6:10 (KJV)

Thy kingdom come and thy will be done is the same. =prayer of surrender.

GOD’S KINGDOM is wherever God's will is done

SURRENDERING TO JESUS MEANS...

1. LETTING GO OF CONTROL

Letting God be God.

“Let go, and know that I am God. I rule the nations. I rule the earth.”

Psalm 46:10 (GW)

Be still and know I am God. (Be still = let go)

Let go the control, and know God is in control.

We try do thing that only God can do. ---STRESS.

THE SERENITY PRAYER

“God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time, enjoying one moment at a time, accepting hardship as a pathway to peace,
taking as Jesus did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it; trusting that You will make all things right if I surrender to your will, so that I may be reasonably happy in this life, and supremely happy with You forever in the next. Amen.

“If a person’s thinking is controlled by his sinful self, then there is death. But if his thinking is controlled by the Spirit, then there is life and peace.”
Rom. 8:6 (ICB)

2. LEARNING TO BE CONTENT

“...I have learned to be satisfied with the things I have and with everything that happens. I know how to live when I am poor, and I know how to live when I have plenty. I have learned the secret of being happy (content) at any time in everything that happens ... I can do all things through Christ, because he gives me strength.”
Phil. 4:11-13 (NCV)

Paul write this when in Prison.

Contentment is a learn experience. Is something I need to learn. Is a choice.

It is only possible to Christ strength. Christ give me the strength to be contented.

One of the problem we have with contentment is because we always looking for explanation in our life that why things happened.

  • God didn't owe us an explanation.
  • When God tell us why, maybe we might not able to understand too.

Teacher is silent, when the test is given. (God is silent, when you are being tested)

You no need explanation, you need God's presence.

“Surrender yourself to the Lord, and wait patiently for him.”

Ps. 37:7a (GW)

3. LAYING DOWN MY PLAN

IAS= is always something

Why do I have many problem?

  • I make bad choices. ( we don't use money, time wise... bad decision...)
  • Satan want to defeat you.
  • We live in imperfect world.

Get connected - community. Not be Lone Ranger.

God want us to learn to be unselfish. God want to watch us to love each other.

Use your worldly resources to benefit other and make friends.

No. 1 used of money is in RELATIONSHIP.

Your generosity store up a reward for you in heaven.

God want us to be a giver, not a taker in life.

I lay down my plan and lose my life by using my life (time, money and energy...) for the benefit of other people.

“This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.”
1 John 3:16 (NIV)

“...Give yourselves to God... surrender your whole being to him to be used for righteous purposes.”

Rom. 6:13 (TEV)

“God will give you all you need from day to day if you live for him and make the Kingdom of God your primary concern.”
Matt. 6:33 (NLT)

Care those thing that God care about. God care about PEOPLE.

4. LEAVING THE FUTURE TO GOD

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”
Prov. 3:5-6 (ESV)

“The Lord takes care of those who obey him, and gives them eternal rewards that last forever. They will survive through hard times and will have more than enough even in a time of famine.”
Psalm 37:18-19 (TEV)

What area of your life is not surrender to God?

(Bedroom... sex life... finances... relationship) that's why you under stress.

Surrender is ultimate expression of FAITH.

Jesus: “...You must give up everything you have to be my follower.”

Luke 14:33 (NCV)

“But let me assure you that no one has ever given up anything...for love of me and to tell others the Good News, who won’t be given back, a hundred times over... and in the world to come he shall have eternal life.”

Mark 10:29-30 (LB)

THE AWESOME POWER OF FOCUS - Ps RICK WARREN

God’s Prescription for Your Life- Part 7

GENESIS 24:1-57 Eliazar’s search for a wife for Isaac illustrates the ten steps of purpose driven goal setting.

1. DETERMINE YOUR POSITION

“Abraham was now old and well advanced in years, and the Lord had blessed him in every way.”

Gen. 24:1

Ask:

• Where am I now?

Spiritually

Physically

Relationship

Financial...

• What am I need to change?

2. DEFINE YOUR PURPOSE

“... go to my country and my own relatives and get a wife for my son Isaac.”

Gen. 24:2-4

Target should be clear and specific

Ask:

• What do I want to be?

• What do I want to do?

• What do I want to have?

We will be afraid when we make it more specific

Make decision first only solve the problem

3. DISCOVER A PROMISE

“The Lord ... spoke to me and promised me saying, ‘To your o spring I will give this land’...”

Gen. 24:7

Claim your promises

Ask:

• What promise can I claim?

Let the size of God determine the size of your goal.

4. DESCRIBE THE PROFIT

“... so that you can get a wife for my son there.”

Gen. 24:7b

Ask:

• What is the reward? • Why do I want it? • How will I feel when finish/complete?

Imagine it after it. God create imagination. That's good.

Two reason to know why you doing:

  1. If you figure out why, God will show you how.
  2. If don't know why, you will easily give up.

Motivation better than accomplishment.

5. DESIRE IN PRAYER

“Then he prayed, ‘O Lord, God of my master Abraham, give me success today’...”

Gen. 24:12

Pray for your goal

Pray for your desire

  1. Reveal your desire (God's delay test your desire)
  2. Depend on God

Ask:

• Am I praying for my goals?

6. DIAGNOSE THE PROBLEM

(Finding the right girl, gaining consent from her parents, and convincing the girl to go home with him.)

Gen. 24:21,49,58

Ask: •Why don’t I have this all ready?

• What are the barriers?

Emotion barriers - fear of success and failure

Take them (problem) one day at a time.

7. DESIGN A PLAN TO OVERCOME THE PROBLEM

His plan: set up a test, show the girl the wealth, get invited home, share his purpose, and pop the question.

Gen. 24:1-15

Ask:

• How do I intend to get there?

• How long would it take?

Make a plan for anything should have

  1. Steps
  2. Deadline (a date)
  3. Schedule

The way you spend your time and your money reveal your priority

8. DISCIPLINE YOUR PERSONALITY

Gen. 24: 21,33,49,56

Mean the growth

Ask:

• Where do I need to grow?

What kind the person should I be?

Areas:

Decision  (vs. 21)

“The servant watched her in silence, wondering whether or not the LORD had given him success in his mission.”

Genesis 24:21 NLT

Appetite (vs. 33)

“Then food was served. But Abraham’s servant said, “I don’t want to eat until I have told you why I have come.” “All right,” Laban said, “tell us.””

Genesis 24:33 NLT

Words (vs. 49)

“So tell me—will you or won’t you show unfailing love and faithfulness to my master? Please tell me yes or no, and then I’ll know what to do next.”

Genesis 24:49 NLT

Time (vs. 56)

“But he said, “Don’t delay me. The LORD has made my mission successful; now send me back so I can return to my master.””

Genesis 24:56 NLT

9. DEPEND ON PEOPLE

“So tell me—will you or won’t you show unfailing love and faithfulness to my master? Please tell me yes or no, and then I’ll know what to do next.” Then Laban and Bethuel replied, “The LORD has obviously brought you here, so there is nothing we can say. Here is Rebekah; take her and go. Yes, let her be the wife of your master’s son, as the LORD has directed.””

Gen. 24:49-51 NLT

Ask:

•Who else can I involve?

Who else can hold you accountable? Support? Input? Advice?

Involve other in the process.

10. DEPOSIT THE PRICE

“The servant brought out gold and silver and articles of clothing and gave them to Rebekah; he also gave costly gifts to her brother and her mother.” Gen. 24:53

There is always a price tag in reaching some goals.

May cost you some time, some money...

Chosen to focus my life for effectiveness.

Willingly to sacrifice or letting go for the benefit of God want me to do.

Do your planning in pencil. Steps...

1. Define your purpose (family, job, hobbies, ministry...)

2. Describe the presence (where am I now, ideas,...)

3. Decide the priority (coz you don't have time do everything)

4. What's the deadline...

5. Determine the price

6. What's you want to involve?

Ask:

• What will it cost me?

• What am I willing to give in order to reach this goal?

• Is it worth it?

Whatever you do, make sure your goals matter.

2.    When somebody disagrees with me, be tender without surrender.
Romans 14:1
3.    When someone disappoint me, be gentle not judgmental.
Ephesians 4:32
